The Tama area is just a short hour by train from central Tokyo’s Shinjuku, Ginza, Asakusa, and Akihabara districts. It offers all the conveniences of urban life along with a rich natural environment, making it a very desirable place to live.
It also has many tourist attractions such as places used as settings for various anime and manga, hot springs, and sake breweries.
The abundant nature of the Tama area is a big attraction, and includes the mountains, lakes and valleys of Okutama in the northwest, and the pristine Tama River. The area’s popular Mount Takao was awarded three Michelin stars in 2007.

Part of Tokyo, the Tama area offers a rich combination of abundant nature and the convenience of urban life. The Tama Promotion Project was launched by 30 municipalities marking 120 years since the area was integrated into Tokyo. The project is called “Tama Hatsu!”—“Discover Tama.” The “ta” in Tama means “many” which neatly encapsulates the diverse attractions this lush green area offers in terms of tourism, cuisine, industry, tradition, history, and culture, and commercial and shopping facilities. The project aims to make people want to visit, to live, to raise families, and to work in Tama. In helping people rediscover Tama, the Tama Promotion Project will shape Tama’s future.
Tamaran-nya is a pure-bred Tama cat, who was born and grew up in the area. This cat is normally quite sedate, but sometimes gets kittenish. It’s a Tama expert and its biggest thrill is collecting information about Tama. No one knows its age and it stays looking young, but one story puts it at 120 years old. There’s no stopping this cat once it gets talking about delicious or fun things in Tama, or about Tama’s history. Whenever it comes upon something that takes its fancy, it exclaims “purr-fect!”
